What to do if your voice prosthesis is leaking

When you have a Provox Plug in place you will not be able to speak with your voice prosthesis. You could consider using an electrolarynx like Provox TruTone Emote or Provox SolaTone Plus during those times. Your clinician can advise you about this. If your voice prosthesis did not leak after cleaning, there might have been food or mucus caught in the prosthesis preventing it from closing. Clean your voice prosthesis at least two times per day and after each meal.

Tips for electrolarynx users

Speaking with an electrolarynx produces a different sort of voice, but with practice and remembering a few important rules, you’ll find a way to make it work for you.

How to use the Provox Plug

Make sure that you have the correct type and size of plug that is designed for your type of voice prosthesis. Wash your hands with warm, soapy water for 20 seconds making sure to wash in between your finger and both sides of your hands. If you have difficulty inserting the Provox Plug, ask someone to help you. They should wear protective equipment such as a mask when needed, because you might cough when the plug is inserted.

How to clean your Provox voice prosthesis

Use the Provox Brush to clean mucus and debris from your voice prosthesis. Make it a routine to brush regularly to prevent blockage and mucus build-up. Consider using the Provox Flush as a part of your cleaning routine. (jump to using Provox Flush) Before brushing and flushing, wash your hands with warm, soapy water for 20 seconds making sure to wash in between your fingers and both sides of your hands.
